Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Pinckney Clair and Margaret Young Workman of Kinards. She spent her entire life in Saluda and Newberry counties. She was a graduate of Bush River High School and received a degree in Business Administration from Newberry College. She worked for 11 years with the US Department of Agriculture (Agriculture Adjustment Administration) and retired in June, 1984 after 30 years of service from the SC State Commission of Forestry as an administrative assistant.
Mrs. Arant was a faithful and dedicated member of Soule Chapel United Methodist Church, where she formerly served as the pianist, Sunday School teacher, church treasurer and member of numerous committees. She was also a member and former treasurer of Chappells Community and Fellowship Club.
She was first married to the late Ashby E. Long and was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Lyles and a brother, Richard Workman.
Surviving are her husband of the home; a son, Jake Arant, Jr. and his wife, Martha Anne, of Chappells; grandchildren, Andrea Parsons of Chappells and Jon-Michael Davis of Richmond, KY; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Mason and Samuel Parsons, Briley and Paxton Davis; four sisters, Mary Claire Shannon of Mt. Pleasant, Edna Ringer of Newberry, Jean Epting and Ann Penn of Cayce; three brothers, Tom Workman of Newberry, Jack Workman of Mountain Rest and Ned Workman of Spartanburg; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Soule Chapel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kathy Carr officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dick Workman, Bob Ringer, Tommy Workman, Jake Montgomery, Sammy Lyles, Charlie Ringer, Rut Workman, Drew Clawson, Dan Epting and Mike Penn.
The family is at the home, 964 Highway 39, Chappells.
