HARRISBURG -- The Rev. Robert Edward Austin , 74, died March 30, 2003 at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Providence Baptist Church in Harrisburg with The Rev. James McBride, Rev. Bill Saylor, Dr. Hugh Cooper, and Rev David Hix officiating. Interment will be in Carolina Memorial Park of Harrisburg.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at Providence Baptist Church.

He was born July 5, 1928 in Mecklenburg County, NC, the son of the late Willie Troy Austin and the late Della Summers Austin . Robert , fondly called "Bob" by his adoring wife Marcell Ludlam Austin who preceded his passing on January 11, 2003, was a minister in the truest sense of the word. He prepared for his ministry by obtaining degrees from Mars Hill Junior College, Carson-Newman College, and his Master of Divinity from Southeastern Seminary. He served as a pastor in the Carolinas for 40+ years leading the following congregations: Swan Quarter Baptist Church; Swan Quarter, NC; Six Mile Baptist Church, Six Mile, SC; Jefferson Baptist Church, Jefferson, SC; Arlington Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC; Temple Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, NC; and Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Morganton, NC where he retired after13 years of service.

Robert was a servant leader, always putting the needs of others before his own. His ministry to others had no bounds of time, he was always serving his congregation and the Lord. Robert not only lived his Christian faith and excelled in ministry, he was a musician as well. He loved music and enjoyed singing as a tenor and playing the piano and organ. Robert also loved his country, have served proudly as a Sergeant in the Army during the Korean War.

Robert was the example of fatherhood and had a fierce love for his children and his grandchildren. His favorite title achieved was that of Poppy to his four grandsons. Robert always marked his pulpits with his life's mission statement, "Sir, We Would See Jesus" from John 12:21. Robert 's family and friends knew that they had already seen Jesus through him.

Survivors include his son, Edward Austin and wife, Esther of Wake Forest, NC; daughter, Lisa Austin Schultz and husband, Steve of Orlando, Florida; grandsons, Austin , Bobby, Logan and Brady; brothers and sisters, Donald Austin of Charlotte, NC, Nancy McLeod of Harrisburg, NC, Bill Austin of Charlotte, NC, Roy Austin of Charlotte, NC, Richard Austin of Charlotte, NC and Carol Austin of Harrisburg, NC.
Preceded in death by brother James Leroy Austin
