James O. Hibbits, Jr., 77, of Sylvania Township, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2001, at his residence. He was a very strong, intelligent, and caring man, who loved his wife and family very deeply.
Jim enjoyed baseball, and this started when he was young, working at the baseball games selling soda. While serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, (Co. B 269th Combat Engr. BN 69th Inf.), he pitched for his company's baseball team. After the war, he returned to Missouri where he met his future wife, Virginia A. Starkey. He obtained BS and MS degrees in analytical chemistry at St. Louis University under the GI bill. His career ultimately brought him to Toledo, OH, where he worked for Owens-Illinois as manager of the Analytical Services Department. He traveled all over the world to solve problems at various manufacturing facilities and was well known for not only his analytical chemistry background, but also his strong problem solving abilities. Upon his retirement from Owens-Illinois in 1987, he founded and was president of Monarch Analytical Laboratories. Jim and his wife, Virginia, enjoyed jazz music and made many life-long friends going to jazz festivals. He collected 78 rpm records and became a leading authority on Bob Crosby and the Bobcats.
He is survived by his son, James O. (Verla) Hibbits III of Germantown, MD; daughters, Lynne (Dennis) Wilson of Toledo, OH, and Kari (Anthony) Shick of Pearland, TX; grandchildren, Jaime, Justin, and Jordan Hibbits, and brother, Roger M. Hibbits of Florissant, MO. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 1/2 years, Virginia A. Hibbits, and his sister, Nancy A. Seaton.
Friends may call at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St., Sylvania, OH, Thursday from 5-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 30, at the Sylvania United Church of Christ, 7240 Erie St., Sylvania, at 11 a.m., Dr. William H. Chidester officiating. Interment Toledo Memorial Park.
His children will miss his love, support, and words of wisdom. The family requests that donations, in lieu of flowers, be sent in his memory to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Rd., Perrysburg, OH, 43551.
