Mrs. Abernathy died Sunday at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.
She was born Sept. 2, 1945 in Slocum to Fred D. and Una Mae Averitte Prater.
Mrs. Abernathy was the past vice president of the First State Bank of Rusk, and also worked Southern Cherokee Federal Credit Union. She was a member of the Muse Missionary Baptist Church where she served as the church clerk for 30 years and taught the tiny tots Sunday school class.
Mrs. Abernathy was preceded in death by her father.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Charles Abernathy; her mother, Una Mae Averitte Prater; a son, Andy Abernathy and wife Karen, all of Slocum; sisters, Freida Evans and husband John of Salmon, Rita "Butch" Hilliard of Slocum; three grandchildren, Lindzey, Andrew and Gracie; and a god-grandson, Justin Jones.
Pallbearers will be Joe Don Abernathy, Jim Dan Abernathy, Mike Abernathy, John David Evans, William Hilliard and Scott Hilliard. Honorary pallbearers will be Brad Hicks, David Hicks, Earnie Powell, Wesley Porter, deacons of Muses Missionary Baptist Church, Nathan Dyess, Jamie Hogan and Boyd Ray.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home, Palestine.
