Harvey married Sarah D. Hutchins (or Hutchens) in Surry County, North Carolina on 21 April 1847.


He enlisted as a Private in Co. "B", 38th North Carolina Infantry, on 19 April 1862. He was listed as a resident of Yadkin County (which was formed out of Surry County in 1850). He died at General Hospital #21 (also known as the Maryland Hospital or Gwathmey Hospital). Cause of death: "variola" (smallpox).


The "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery", with the assistance of Adams descendant David Falkenstein, arranged for creation of a government marker, which was placed on 24 August 2012.
