He was born in Castiglion Fiorentino, (Arezzo), Toscana, Italy and began his career as a journalist to the newspaper "Il Piccolo" of Trieste .In 1993 Castagna won the award "Telegatto", as a man of the year, and afterwards he worked in many shows broadcasted by RAI and Mediaset(an Italian indipendent network). He is fondly remembered for his most popular TVshow "Stranamore". In 1995 he appeared in TV mini-series "Cuori e Denari" and as an actor in 1997 in the fiction "La Villa dei Misteri". Married to dermatologist Maria Concetta Pucci Romano since 1989 to 2005 (they had a daughter in 1992)Since August 1995 Castagna had been in love with actress Francesca Rettondini.Their love affair was cut short by his serious illness. He died in 2005 from an internal hemorrhage at the age of 59 after suffering an aortic dissection in 1998.
