~~~MY MOTHER, who was the real life Donna Reed, always there in all ways.I always felt sorry for people who didn't have her for a mother"~~~
Kathleen Veech(nee O'Brien) is the most wonderful,Daughter,Sister,Wife,Mother,Grandmother and Great-grandmother you could ask for.
She was the third child of Brigid and James O'Brien. She had two older sisters, Theresa(who died in Ireland when she was 2)Sister Margaret O'Brien,DOD 1/3/04) Maryknoll Sisters, and a younger brother, Brother Gerard O'Brien,DOD 1/3/03) Order of The Franciscan Friars. Surprisingly(or not LOL) they all died within one year to the day of each other,and in reverse order.
Before she married she was an Executive Secretary to the President of The Inco Company, taking steno and typing at 120 words per minute on an old,Underwood manual typewriter, which I still have to this day. I can type about three WPM on it. LOL.I used to love to watch her type. I imagine if computers existed then she would have been thrilled.
She was the beloved and devoted wife of Edward Joseph Veech Sr., whom she married on 7 April 1956. I was adopted officially in Sept.1962.I thank God everyday that these were the wonderful people that I grew up with. There is true sickness in my biological family(with the exception of my cousin Billy who has become like a brother) and the thought of having grown up even near them brings a chill to my soul. God is Great.They adopted my brother in 1965 and our family was complete.She instilled love, faith,joy ,laughter and family loyalty, and no evil was near us.I shudder at what might have been.
Her death devastated my dad and he was never the same after she passed.He moved in with me, but started throwing away his heart pills and not wanting to stick to his low fat diet for his heart. It was broken.When she died people cried for my father,because they knew for sure that this angel of a lady was with Our Lord, but my Dad would not have "His Kathleen".I once asked my Mom why she didn't work outside the house(like some mothers in the 70's)and my father said "I make the living,your Mother makes life worth living".All the neighbors marveled as they watched him hold her car door open, and walk down the street holding hands.I would hear him some nights cry for her and my heart would break.Some nights as I would walk by his room, he would say "Is that you Kathleen"?, and I would just hold his hand until he fell asleep. He had lost his love of living without her.
He joined her in Jesus' loving care on April 22nd,2005.I would have loved to see that reunion.I am sure my mother is taking care of Daddy the same loving way he took care of her when Alzheimer's stole her beautiful memory.She always knew who "her Ed" was though,and thank God she knew who I was too.
Even with the Alzheimer's you were still as angelic as ever.Everyone who really knew you loved you.Your loving guidance, your sure advice, your comforting, quiet strength was what brought us all through our "silly" dramas.You were never into the "free" style of parenting that seems to prevail in today's society. You used to tell me certain things were not "negotiable" and you didn't care if everyone else's mother said it was "OK".You and Daddy were always a united team so divide and conquer did not work out to well for me. LOL.
Everyone used to say you were a a Saint or an Angel, because you were so sweet, so loving and warm,so gracious.You used to get so embarrassed when I told you what an Angel you were, you shouldn't have been, you were that and so much more.I used to joke with your Granddaughters and say"well I am just like grandma", and they would laugh and say YOU"RE NOTHING LIKE GRANDMA" LOL.(Hmmm...wonder what they may write about me?LOL)My Mom and Dad were both color blind and taught that all were equal and no one was ever judged,ever,on race,religion etc... people were judged on the merits alone... our family today is like the league of Nations. LOL.If I could be a quarter of what you were to my girls then I have succeeded.No one can take your place.You had such a deep faith in "Our Lord" and I hope in that manner I am now following in your footsteps. You always had serenity and peace of mind.You reminded me of the song by Randy Travis "When Mama Prayed". Your prayers got us all through a lot of heartaches, and you always knew how to make me feel better.
I miss that so much Mommy.Things that seem to allude us here.I am trying to get to your level of faith. I know you and Daddy continue to pray for us, only now the prayers are richer and deeper because you are with the "Holy of Holies".
You no longer need faith, you have seen.Daddy always watched over you as your illness progressed. You two were truly sent by a Great God, and I was lucky to have you both.You were a lovely, humble, gentle soul who taught me not to judge and to show everyone compassion,and there is no one that you could be compared too!
You are survived by your loving daughter Patricia,(former son-in-law-Freddie and friend Louie) son Edward,granddaughters,Kathleen,Kimberly,Tawanna and Theresa.At the time "She entered the Heavenly Kingdom" she had one Great-Granddaughter Kaylaa.
I DID NOT LOSE YOU,I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE !!With a wonderful,beautiful soul I called Daddy, and of course Our Lord and Savior Jesus.
I know the first words you heard were "Well done good and faithful servant"! Well done indeed! I love you.
~~A special Thank-You to "All My Love" for the lovely icon she made of my parents and of my parents and myself~~~Also a special thanks to Andy who took the time to make a special icon for my Mom's Angel Day, it's beautiful.The people here on this sight are so terrific !!!
~~~~Heartfelt thanks to all who leave flowers for my beloved Mother,I read and treasure everyone and they bring me great comfort and joy.I always try to say thank you,but sometimes time slips away.~~~~

SHE WAS MY HERO

She's never pulled anyone from a burning building
She's never rocked Central Park to a half a million fans, screaming out her name
She's never hit a shot to win the game
She's never left her footprints on the moon
She's never made a solo hot air balloon ride, around the world,
No, she's just your everyday average girl (but)

She's somebody's hero
A hero to her baby with a skinned up knee
A little kiss is all she needs
The keeper of the cheerios
The voice that brings Snow White to life
Bedtime stories every night
And that smile lets her know
She's somebody's hero

She didn't get a check every week like a nine-to fiver
But she's been a waiter, and a cook and a taxi driver
For twenty years, there at home, until the day her girl was grown
Giving all her love to her was her life's ambition
But now her baby's movin' on, and she'll soon be missin' her
But not today, those are tears of joy runnin' down her face

She's somebody's hero
A hero to her daughter in her wedding dress
She gave her wings to leave the nest
It hurts to let her baby go down the aisle she walks right by
Looks back into her mother's eyes
And that smile lets her know
She's somebody's hero

Thirty years have flown right past
Her daughters' starin' at all the photographs
Of her mother, and she wishes she could be like that
Oh, but she already is

She's somebody's hero
A hero to her mother in a rockin' chair
She runs a brush through her silver hair
The envy of the nursing home
She drops by every afternoon
Feeds her mama with a spoon
And that smile lets her know
Her mother's smile lets her know
She's somebody's hero
