Actor. He is best remembered for playing the roles of Fred Jackson in "Coronation Street"(1961-66), Stan Hardman in"Nearest and Dearest"(1968-73), and Wally Batty in the world's longest-running sitcom, "Last of the Summer Wine" (1975-87). The son of a coal dealer, he performed in the E.N.S.A. during World War II, entertaining the troops. In the 1950's, he worked as a stooge to Dave Morris on the BBC radio show, "Club Night", which went to television as "The Artful Dodger"(1959). TV credits included, "Here's Harry"(1961-64), "Z Cars"(1963-1973), "Dixon of Dock Green"(1966-71), "The Wackers"(1975), and "Striker"(1976). Film credits included "Charlie Bubbles"(1968), "The Reckoning"(1970), and "Yanks"(1979). He served as a northern representative of the Catholic Stage Guild, and was appointed a Papal Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great for charity work.
