AEKERNO
Fort Missoula Cemetery – Who is Buried Under Aekerno's Headstone? Unknown!
The small gray military headstone at Fort Missoula just says "--- AERKERNO CIVILIAN". The Find-A-Grave entry has birth and death unknown. But with an unusual name like that, how many could there be? How hard could it be? Unknown. Searching genealogy websites did not reveal matches, except as related to this burial, but one record did say he was originally buried at Fort Ellis, which was active 1867 – 1887.
The Find-A-Grave entry was made based on just the inscription, but more records have become available on line since he was added in 2008. The most recent "old" list of interments for Fort Missoula ends at 1910. That roster spelled his name as Arkerno, civilian, from Fort Ellis. The previous roster was completed in 1906, and spelled his name Aerkerno. The roster before that isn't dated, but ends in 1886 and has 39 entries – the same number as were moved to Fort Missoula the next summer. The second line in this chronological listing is Unknown Citizen. There is nothing close to Aekerno. The roster created before this one lists Unknown Citizen, no other data, and no other name close to Aekerno. Finally, my earliest Fort Ellis interment list starts with Unknown Citizen died during the winter of 1867-1868 buried in space 1-6.
Picture a soldier doing clerical duties – reading from a list of interments, making a new list. Maybe the prior scribe had less than ideal penmanship. Working in less than ideal lighting. Scribble out the words "Unknown" and "Aerkerno". A person who has experience trying to read old handwriting will see how "Unknown Citizen" could eventually become "Aerkerno Citizen" by (at least) the fifth time it is recopied.
So who is buried under the headstone Aekerno? No one named Aekerno. It is almost certainly Fort Ellis' Unknown civilian. Does he have to stay unknown? Probably.
