Perly served the Union, enlisting in 1862, Company I, Regiment 193, Ohio Infantry. He died at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio, from pneumonia, while still serving in the Civil War.

Perly and Hellen Jay were married December 6, 1863. Military records indicate Hellen J. Brush (widow) made an application for a pension on 20 May 1865, and an application for a minor was filed on 23 December 1867, naming a certain Beckwith as the minor's guardian (legal counsel). On 8 July 1866 in Eaton County, Michigan, Hellen A. Brush married DeWitt C. Beckwith. They lived in Olivet, Eaton, Illinois. Hellen was born 8 December 1843, and died 16 Mar 1923, at Aurora, Kane, Illinois. Helen and DeWitt should not be confused with the Helen and Daniel William Beckwith that lived in Norvell, Jackson, Michigan.

Perly's parents were Porter McDonough Brush 1815-1858 and Alice Drusilla (Brainerd) Brush 1819-1893. Perly is buried in the same lot with his brother Rev. Perry, and Perry's wife Mary E.
