She was born on Jan. 1, 1928, in Shirley, Ill., to the late Henry and Bertha (Gilbert) Umphress. She married George J. Bennett Jr. on Sept. 23, 1951, in Lacon. He preceded her in death on May 28, 2002.
She is survived by her children, Roger Bennett of Lacon and Linda (Todd) Volker of Ottawa; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Burke of Ashboro, N.C., Roger (Amanda) Bennett of Lacon, Timothy (Amber) Auer of Henry, Heather Auer of Washington and Leo Volker of Ottawa; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Umphress; daughter-in-law, Pam Bennett; and grandson, Michael Bennett.
Laura was a member of the Lacon-Sparland United Methodist Church.
She was a quilter extraordinare and was a member of the Methodist Quilters, the Marshall County Quilters Guild and the Marshall County Homemakers. For many years, she was a member of the Chilli Castoffs.
Laura was self-employed as a folk artisan and was known for her beautiful homemade arts and crafts.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed by all who loved her.
Services will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at Lenz Memorial Home in Lacon. Pastor Gloria Davis will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded and interment in the Lacon Cemetery will be at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Lacon-Sparland Rescue 52.
