When Laurie died our world ended. We went to work like little robots but it was so lonely inside. We had Laurie's pets outside and one by one they began to die. We decided we needed something inside to keep us company so we looked in the paper for ads for dogs. We saw one and bought it from a lady in Houston when he was 12 weeks old. He was the last of the litter. We brought him home and that night put him in a crate to sleep. He barked all night long. Next night we put him in the mother in law house in the back... He barked all night long and tore up the carpet. Next night put him in a baby play pen in the mother in law house in back... he barked all night long, somehow got out of play pen. Next night put something on top of play pen to keep him in... He still got out. WE quickly realized he did not like being alone. He followed me everywhere in the house... when i went to the bathroom he would come in and sit on the scale... He stayed up with me after eddie went to bed.. he would jump on Eddies chair and lie there till i went to bed... ssometimes he would sleep on my chair... but he liked to stretch out...Then we started letting him sleep with us very young. He slept inbetween our pillows for almost 14 years, till the night before he died. He followed me to the bathroom and sat on the scale when i was in there. He never wanted to stay outside by himself, but if I was out there working in the yard he would lie down in the grass and wait for me. He always let us know when he heard noises outside and barked to let us know.
We bought a metal crate and he stayed in there when we both went to work... When Gunnar was about a year old we mated him and i got the pick of the litter which was his daughter named Tiffanye. She preceded him in death, December 11, 2009. They both stayed together in the crate when we worked -- from 7 am till i got home at around 4...They were both very good dogs.
Gunnar never had too many medical problems.. when he was three he had a seizure and i thought he was dying. took him to vet. then started keeping up with them have them all written down. never hd enogh to put on meds... vet said they wre more problems than intermittent seizures. he wouldn't let anybody hold him but me when he had one...
When he was almost 13 he had a blood blister under his neck and the vet removed it when he cleaned his teeth. aa few months before his anal sac plugged up and the vet had to lance it.. those were all the problems he had in his almost 14 years of life...I miss him so much... We always went outside in the front yard every night before i went to bed... I'd water the plants at 2 or 3 am and he'd always come out with me... He didn't llke to be outside by himself... H ewould always come right back in. when he needed to go potty he would go to door and scratch it... then when he go threw he'd come to the door and bark...both he and Tiffanye were very good dogs...
Gunnar was our first inside dog since we got married, now 37 years, and he was Eddie's very first dog.. he loved and misses him so much. we both do. no other dogs we could ever get would evr replace gunnar and tiffanye. thesetwo we had now i've already decided i'll never get so attached to them or the four rescue cats... i can't go thru that much grief every again.. i think my heart would stop.
I can tell you after losing your only child, a pet becomes your child. He and Tiffanye helped us through our grieving by being there for us to cry on, talk to, hug, or just to lie on our lap. They were lifesavers.
And now they are both gone....
