Walter M. Rozelle, 89, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at home, of lung cancer.

Walt was born July 10, 1925, in St. Ignatius, Mont., to Benjamin and Delia Rozelle, the second of four children, including brothers John and Carl and sister Betty. The family moved to Dalton Gardens, Idaho, in the early 1930s.

Walt joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, spending four years in the South Pacific during the final years of World War II. He returned to the Coeur d'Alene area and went to work for the telephone company as a lineman. He worked throughout northern Idaho, Montana and Washington as the crews worked to bring telephone service to the rural areas. In 1949, he was working in Davenport, Wash., when he met a young telephone operator, Joanne Turner. They were married May 7, 1950, and made their home in Coeur d'Alene. Walt was a police officer for the city of Coeur d'Alene for eight years, but spent most of his working life working for the telephone company.

One of Walt's greatest passions in life was airplanes. He loved to fly and owned several airplanes throughout his life. He flew one of the airplanes he built to Oshkosh, Wis., to the Experimental Aircraft Association annual get-together. He always commented on how far that was in that little airplane at 60 mph. He also loved to build and fly radio-controlled airplanes: a hobby he was able to enjoy to the end of his life. He was a ham radio operator and was active in the local radio groups wherever he lived during his retirement.

When Walt and Joanne retired in 1982, they sold their home and moved onto a sailboat in Puget Sound, where they lived for two years. They had many adventures during their retirement, traveling throughout Alaska, Mexico and all over the United States in their recreational vehicle. Walt and his wife worked as trail bosses, leading RV caravans on tours through Alaska for three summers. After many years of living in their RV, Walt and Joanne settled in Arizona, living both at Tucson and later at Cottonwood, near Sedona. They moved to Lewiston in 2000 to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Walt is survived by his wife, Joanne; his son, Mitch; daughter Krista; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

At Walt's request, there will be no funeral service. He will be interred at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Medical Lake, Wash. Donations may be made in his name to St. Joseph Hospice, and those wishing to may sign the online guest book at www.mtviewfuneralhome.com.
