Smith participated in the D-Day jump into Normandy and was awarded the Bronze Service Arrowhead, a small device worn on the EAME (Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal) ribbon and which denotes participation in a combat parachute jump.

He was the son of Samuel G. and Mattie E. Baugh and had sisters Devault and Vivian.
