Hugh Biggs, 88, of Manhattan, retired blacksmith and Gallatin Valley rancher, died Thursday at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.

He was born in Salesville (Gallatin Gateway) on August 12, 1886, the son of Harvey and Francis Biggs. He received his education in Pass Creek and Bozeman schools. He ranched for many years in the Gallatin Valley and was a blacksmith in Belgrade, Gallatin Gateway and Bozeman, retiring three years ago.

He lived in Bozeman from 1949 until moving to Manhattan in 1973.

Biggs married Grace Pavey in Bozeman on October 20, 1916.

He was a past master of the Belgrade Masonic Lodge No. 85.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Betty, of Sacramento, Calif.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Oscar (Rhea) Witcosky of San Miguel, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Knight of Orophina, Idaho, Mrs. Georgia O'Brian of Pasadena, Calif., and Mrs. Ruth Neil of Polson; three brothers, Andy, Louis and Ralph Biggs, all of Belgrade; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. Burial will be in the Sunset Hills Cemetery.
