DWIGHT - The funeral for Earlen Harry Von Qualen, 99, of Herscher, and formerly of Gardner, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dwight.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hager Funeral Home, Dwight, a business originally established by his uncle and cousin. Friends may also call for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
Mr. Von Qualen died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Riverside Hospital, Kankakee.
Earlen was born Oct. 20, 1912, in rural Gardner, the son of Harry and Marie (Nelson) Von Qualen. He married Margaret Eskildsen in 1940 and they enjoyed 67 years of marriage before her death in 2008.
Survivors include three sons, Richard (Marjorie) of Kempton, Virden (Mary) of Batavia, and Gordon (Linda) of Gardner; six grandchildren, Brett (Shelly) Von Qualen and Carrie (Marvin) Long, all of Kempton, Kevin (Lindsay) Von Qualen of Lakewood, Colo., Lauren (Robb) Emmett of Elgin, Leanne (Greg) Koch of Spokane, and Karen (David) Bunting of Aurora; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Vivian Rieke, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Von Qualen, both of Dwight; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ralph, and brother-in-law, Edward Rieke, as well as one granddaughter, Jorie Lynne Von Qualen.
He was educated at Munson School and graduated from Gardner High School.
He farmed the family's Centennial farm until his retirement.
He served on the Grundy County F.S. Board for several years and was involved with ASCS and Farm Bureau.
Earlen and Margaret were avid campers, traveling all 50 states as well as Mexico, Great Britain, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand and China.
Earlen served as president of the Illinois Wally Byam Airstream Club.
The Von Qualens wintered in Dade City, Fla., at Traveler's Rest Resort.
He was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dwight.
He spent hours carving wood, hooking fine yarn rugs, restoring lawn chairs with macrame and gave away a large number of wooden back scratchers that he made.
The family greatly appreciated the care he received in his last years spent at Harvest View Assisted Living in Herscher, where he was to have celebrated his 100th birthday in 16 days.
The family suggests memorials may be made to his church.
