Played in Minor League Baseball from 1901 to 1914 as a first baseman, while also managing. He was a Western League umpire for part of the 1915 season before leaving baseball to become assistant police chief of Topeka, Kansas. Abbot returned to baseball to manage the Tulsa Oilers in 1919 and led them to two championships in two years at the helm. He then was skipper of the Memphis Chicks for the next two seasons, winning a Southern Association crown in 1921. Overall, he was a minor league manager for 34 seasons between 1903 and 1947, compiling a record of 2,180-2,037. Abbott was a Washington Senators coach in 1935 and scouted for the club late in his life.
