Bertie,as he was known,was the youngest of three children born to Alfred John Blake and Mabel Blake nee Worthington.He was a Soldier during the First World War 1914-19, also known as the Great War. He rose through the ranks of the Oxford and Buckingham Light Infantry Regiment and gained a Commission as an Officer with the Tank Regiment.In 1916 he was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery in the field, whilst serving as a Sergeant with the Machine Gun Corps.In 1921 he was promoted to full Lieutenant.In 1927, aged 33, he married Majorie Eileen Cooke and they had two children, Rodney John Francis and Barbara A. He maintained his family links with South Africa and travelled there many times.He had many ventures in life including running a pig farm at Lovedean and Chairman of the Empire cinema at Havant. He passed away on 23th July 1962, aged 68.He was buried in Waterlooville Cemetery on 28th July 1962.There is an anomaly over the date of death. His gravestone states 23rd July, but his probate record, proven at Winchester on 9th October 1962, records a death date of 24th July.
