Isabella Penelope Laird was born in Scotland, but came to Elora, Ontario, Canada as a baby with her parents, grandparents, and siblings. They were among the first settlers of the town. In 1860, she married Herman Frederick Ahrens of Berlin, Ontario (now Kitchener). They had one son, Carl Henry Ahrens, who grew up to become a well-known landscape painter. Isabella and Herman separated when Carl was still very young, but could not divorce at the time. Herman died in 1876, freeing her to marry Richard W. Hynds of Toronto.
