Joseph Laird was part of a family of shipbuilders in Aberdeen, Scotland. He came to Canada with his wife, children, and in-laws in 1841. The ship was under the care of Captain Drummond, a friend of Sir George Murray.

In 1867 Joseph Laird, a mason, freeholder, aged 55, lived on the NW corner of the current intersection of Nichol and Wellington in Elora today. Just off Wellington County Road # 21.
Joseph was described in the Fergus News-Record as "Honest, outspoken and industrious, he was a typical Scotchman and respected by the whole neighborhood."
