Margaret is the daughter of Peter Currie and Jane McNiven, born in Carnduncan, Kilchoman Parish, Islay, Argyll, Scotland. The Currie family immigrated to Erin, Wellington, Ontario in 1855, Margaret was about 7 at the time. Margaret's father died the following year.
Her mother Jane remarried, had 3 more children and this family left for Michigan, USA in 1866. Margaret stayed behind and eventually married a young widower Ephraim Barbour on Nov. 4, 1870 in Erin. They raised 11 children, losing two infant sons. (The stone says 3 infants - so one has not been documented)
