Sam was born to Lottie and Ila Dague Cerny in Enid growing up there and was selected as an All-State catcher on the baseball team before graduating from Enid High School in 1950. He attended college at OU, earning a degree in geological engineering in 1955. Sam started his career with Shell Oil and also held positions at Ramsey Engineering and Cleary Petroleum as well as independently consulting before taking the position of President of Grace Petroleum in 1974, also becoming CEO in 1976. He retired from Grace Petroleum in 1991. Sam has served as President of the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association and Vice-President of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, in addition to several positions promoting the University of Oklahoma and it's Engineering department, and has held positions in the leadership of YMCA in Oklahoma City as well as leadership in several other civil and social organizations in Oklahoma City.
