OBIT: Duluth News Tribune - May 30, 2004
Dr. James Albert Benzmiller 'Doc', of Canon City, Colo., died Thursday, May 27, just two days short of his 70th birthday.
Doc was born May 29, 1934 in Madison, Wis. Doc put himself through medical school in Madison, by joining the military and working at a delicatessen (from whence we can only surmise came his love of all good things edible). As a resident pathologist, he married the love of his life, Rita M. Wolff, in Duluth, Minn. on Jan. 12, 1963. Doc's army obligations transferred him to Fort Carson in 1964.
Upon conclusion of his service, he became a practicing pathologist at St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo which eventually led to his establishment as the pathologist for St. Thomas More, Canon City. The Benzmillers moved to Canon in 1973 and established a residence in the Gibson Mansion where Doc and Rita have lived ever since. Doc's home was, for many years, a whirlwind of activity. Doc and Rita opened their home to students of both Holy Cross Abbey and St. Scholastica. Doc was a passionate professional, developing the lab at St. Thomas More, from one room in 1973 to the multi-room fully-equipped lab it remains today.
Jim was a generous man, helping financially wherever he could, and was always there to lend moral support and a steady shoulder to anyone struggling to bear their troubles. Whenever he could, he donated the gift of his wonderful singing voice to churches and funeral homes.
Doc is survived by his wife, Rita; mother, Ethel; and brother, Joe. Doc's children are daughter, Mary Theresa Sheehy, her husband Stephen and their son, Stephen James; his sons Gregory James, his wife Nancy; son Philip Gerard; and son James Albert Jr. his wife Tracy and children Sonya, Elizabeth and Vincent. Finally, Doc is survived by his larger family of numerous friends. He loved all of you very much.
VISITATION:5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Holt Family Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Father Ignatius Smith, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow Mountain Vale Memorial Gardens. Holt Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
