OBIT: BOXFORD — William A. Barrell Jr., 83, a long-time West Boxford resident died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 at his home.
He was born in Lawrence in 1925 and moved to North Andover at an early age.
A graduate of Governor Dummer Academy, he served with the 95th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II earning the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
Upon his discharge, he attended the McIntosh School of Accounting before joining his family's textile firm until it was sold.
At this time he changed careers, entering the business of investments. During which he was on the Board of Directors of the Granite Trust Co., Quincy, as well as the Waltham Watch Co., Waltham.
After his retirement, he stayed busy in many endeavors including as Trustee of the Barker Free School Trust.
He leaves his wife, Janet (Stewart) Barrell of 56 years; his son, William A. Barrell and wife Suzanne of Methuen; and his daughter, Jean (Barrell) Dobson and husband Thomas of Keene, N.H. He is also survived by six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Bill was Past Commander of the James L. Melvin American Legion Post 379, Boxford.
ARRANGEMENTS: Graveside services will be held at Ridgewood Cemetery, North Andover on Friday, Aug. 21 at 11 a.m.
