Dies Following
Lengthy Illness

Mr. Charles H. Bruington
passed away last Monday evening
at Veteran's Hospital at
Sawtelle after a lingering illness
of several months. He was
born in Wabansee County, Kan.,
a son of the late Mr. James W.
and Mrs. Jennie Beck Bruington,
pioneer citizens of the Pico
Heights community.

Funeral services were held
Friday afternoon at the chapel
at Rosedale Cemetery, where
he was interred with Masonic
rites in the family plot. Bishop
A. P. Shaw, retired bishop of
the Methodist church, recited
the eulogy and the last prayer.

Mr. Bruington is survived by
two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Burke,
first Negro Los Angeles city
school teacher and administrator,
and Miss Ethel Bruington,
nursery school instructor, and
one brother, Ernest Bruington,
longtime employee with the
city Public Works Dept.

Charlie, as he was called by
those who knew him, had lived
a rather quiet and secluded life
since his honorable discharge
from the Army as corporal after
World War I.

He was charter member of
the Holland Lodge No. 20 of
the Masons, of which he was
one of the last two surviving
original members; and of the
Col. James F. Beck Post of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars,
named for his uncle, Col. James
F. Beck.

His early public school
training was at S. Berendo
Street School and his early
Sunday school affiliation was
with Wesley Methodist Churchy
He was an early member of the
Teamsters Union.

1900,10,20,30,40,50 Census has him on the same street, 975 Berendo St., in Los Angeles. 1900 census has Feb. 1886 for birth but 1910,20,30,40, and 50 census has his age as 22,32,42,52, and 60. Found death certificate that stated 2 Feb. 1887 for DOB. Can not find family James and Jennie Bruington in 1890 census.
