my mother moved to new york shortly after my parents were married in the late 1940s.they settled in the bronx and soon started their family.
my mother got a job as a seamstress in manhattan, where she remained until 1987.during this time she had my brothers, jorge luis and harold(both now deceased),my sister evette(also deceased),and me.
she was a lady who could get your attention with just one look, but could also tell you first hand how things were way back when and you knew it was the truth.
such as how things were during ww2 for people in puerto rico.this being such a small island, they really were at the mercy of the government or even further back when they had to struggle during the depression.these were some of the reasons they decided to start their married life here.even though their hearts would always remain in puerto rico, they knew their decision was the best for us,at the time.
my mother always made sure we knew where we came from,so we could appreciate what they sacrificed to make sure we would havve what they didnt have.even though many times we acted as if we didnt,we did.i still do.
my mother lived long enough to be called grandma(or as my children called her, mom).
she passed away on january 22,1988 at the age of 58.my mom left us a legacy of stories and the ability to get through anything.without everything she taught me,i would not have been able to become who i am today.
what can i say except-thank you for everything, even though i didnt appreciate then,i do now.we love you and miss you everyday.
till we meet again...your daughter ,grandchildren- Nereida, rebecca, carmen, mariah, kristen, brandon and your great-grandchildren-destiny,travis.vanessa,aiden,analise and little evette(we call her evie too).great grandson jaden was born on December 29,2009.
