Singer. Sister-In-Law of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. She was born into a musical family but, even though she spent a season singing at the Burgtheater, did not make much of an impression on audiences of the day. Her fame today resides in her association with Mozart, who married her older sister Constanze. When the composer died in 1791 she was at her sister's side, helping to care for dying brother-in-law. Her impressions of Mozart and his final illness were recorded many years later and used in biographies by Franz Niemetschek and Georg Nikolaus von Nissen. This first hand information became accepted as the standard by which many Mozart historians judged the composer for years to come. In 1807 she married Jakob Haibel, the cathedral choirmaster of Djakovar, Slavonia. After Haibel’s death in 1826 Sophie moved to Salzburg, where her sister Constanze was living.
