On Christmas Eve 1861 a portion of Loudon Park Cemetery was commissioned as a cemetery for soldiers. The burial ground was used for Confederate soldiers who died in local hospitals during the war. By the end of the Civil War there were over 200 soldiers buried here. In the ensuing years several hundred fallen Maryland Civil War soldiers were buried here, having been brought home from battlefields in distant states. "Erected to the memory of the Confederate dead by the Loudon Park Confederate Memorial Association" is carved into the memorial. Over 600 graves now occupy Confederate Hill.
