Charlotte Matilda Pyfrom was born in the Bahamas, the daughter of Mary Newbold and Peter Pyfrom. She was baptized in Nassau September 18, 1808, according to St Matthews records. Her mother died in 1813 when Charlotte was only five years old. On March 8, 1826, Charlotte married Benjamin Vincent Archer, Jr. in Nassau. They had five children in the Bahamas: Gilbert Allen Archer, born May 9, 1827; Augustus A. Archer, born March 14, 1829; Benjamin Vincent Archer, born May 22, 1833; William Archer, born 1836; and Olivia Archer, born August 1838. In 1839, the family immigrated from the Bahamas to Key West where Benjamin worked as a blacksmith and they had seven more children: Evelyn Mary Archer, born June 14, 1840; Elizabeth Archer, born 1843; Charlotte Matilda Archer, born 1843; Mary Ellen Archer, born 1845; Jessie W. Archer, born 1847; Clotilda C. Archer, born 1849; and Wesley Archer, born May 1852. When Benjamin died in 1880, Olivia was living on Caroline Street in Key West and had some of her family living with her. She had her son, Gilbert, two of her widowed daughters, Evelyn and Mary, four grandsons Claude, Michael, and Walter Roberts and Malcomb Archer, and one granddaughter, Minnie Roberts. Five years later, only Charlotte's daughter Mary Stuber was living with her. Charlotte died in 1891 and was buried in the Key West City Cemetery. ©2010 by Claudia Naugle
