Susie A. Case, 91, of Ludington went to meet her maker at her home, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 24th, 2003. She had been in failing health for the past month.
Susie was born on June 4th, 1912 in Charlevoix to Angeline Odeimin and Peter Walker. She also attended Mount Pleasant Indian
School and was an Elder of the Little Traverse Bay
Band of Odawa Indians. To those who knew and loved her, she was known as “Momma.” One June 27th, 1942, She married George M. Case in Charlevoix. The day of her interment, will be the couple’s 61 wedding anniversary.
They raised 12 children. He was a commercial fisherman and passed away on May 13th 1991.
In addition to her husband, she was proceeded in death by her parents; four brothers, Levi, Peter, Silas, Benjamin; two sisters, Mary Ann and Lucy. She also lost three sons, Melvyn George in 1966, Silas David in 1983, and Herbert William in 1996. Also proceeding her in death were three grandchildren.
Survivors include five daughters and four sons, Geraldine (Ret. Capt. Bruce) Masse, Georgiana (Larry Comstock), Jolly, Benjamin Case, Don (Helen) Case, Louis (Staci) Case, All of Ludington. Bernard (Janice) Case of West Seneca, NY., Bernadine (Tim) Campbell of Kingsford, MI., Lucille (John Rayle) LaFreniere of Munising and Angeline (Randall) Castle of Beaumont, Texas. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Marian Burch, of Muskegon, 31 Grandchildren, 37 Great Grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, two other great grandsons and one great-great are expected in the fall.
“Momma” was an active long-time active member of the Ludington Baptist Church was happiest when surrounded by her family and close friends. No gathering was complete without her. Her interest were family get-togethers, going to the casino, rides in the state park, pow-wows, bingo with her family and friends, sitting on her porch and collecting angels.
She will always be remembered by her sense of humor, spontaneity, love of life, deep sense of faith and love of family and friends. No matter what life handled her, she never complained. She took great pride in her Native Culture. We will all miss her stories of her life experiences.
Services for Susie Ann Case will be held at the Dorrell Funeral Home in Ludington at 2 PM Friday, June 27th. Visitation will be from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Thursday June 26th. The Rev. Ralph Wheaton of Ludington Baptist Church and Joe Mitchell, cultural preservationist will officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington.
The Dorrell Funeral Home in Ludington is in charge of arrangements.
