In 1912 or 1913 he married Emma Schuppe. The couple become parents of 16 children.
Walter worked as a shepherd. For many years he lived with his family in the district of Börde/Saxony-Anhalt, where most of his children were born. Later, the family lived for some time in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld /Saxony-Anhalt and County of North Saxony, before he settled down firmly in the district of Wittenberg/Saxony-Anhalt. Here he worked in the former Flak barracks and did small jobs until his retirement.
He died of heart failure during a bus ride in Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
