Prominent Troy Lawyer Dies at Hospital Monday. Former Prosecuting Attorney of Miami County Dies Following Long Illness - Well Known in Law Circle.
Following a lingering illness of many months, Alva B. Campbell, 53, former prosecuting attorney of Miami County and one of the outstanding members of the legal profession in the county, passed away at the Stouder Memorial hospital about 11 o'clock Monday evening.
Although in ill health for more than a year, Mr. Campbell was not confined to his bed until last November when he went to a hospital in Cleveland for treatment. He was seriously ill there for a number of weeks but later improved and brought to his home.
For a time after returning to his home his condition improved and he was able to take auto rides and transact some business, although he was not able to return to his office. Recently his condition became gradually worse, and several days ago he was removed to the hospital from his home at 411 South Plum Street.
Born on a farm one mile south of Troy, October 20, 1876, Mr. Campbell secured his early education in the Concord township schools. Later he taught school for several years, following which he entered Ohio Northern university where he was graduated from the law department in 1900.
After his admission to the bar, Mr. Campbell located in Troy, and in 1902 he was elected prosecuting attorney, filling that office for two terms.
As prosecuting attorney, Mr. Campbell established an unusual record and laid the foundations for his later career in which he attained unusual eminence as a member of the Miami County bar.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the late residence under the direction of the Rev. I. L. Dungan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, with the Scottish Rite ritualistic service under the direction of the Rev. Upton Thomas, rector of Trinity Episcopal church. Members of the Miami County bar will attend the funeral in a body. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Troy.
