In 1877, he married Amanda "Mandy" Holtifield in 1877, in Tennessee. They migrated to Arkansas where they established themselves at Jenny Lind, in Sebastian County. Simpson and Mandy had at least two children: Daughery Vantus and Melvin Simpson Autry.
Simpson died in 1893. Armanda received a widow's pension for his military service. She died some years later, in 1909. Both are buried at Steep Hill Cemetery as are their sons.
