My grandmother Anna was a wonderful kind-hearted woman whom I miss a lot.
She was born in Altenwalde, a place that is nowadays a Polish town. Her parents were farmers, so my grandmother was born into a rather hard life. She worked as a farm laborer and as a housekeeper at other farms. World War II changed her fate, when her famly left the old hometown. My grandfather passed away shortly after the end of the war, so Anna had to raise her two boys as a unique parent.
When I was born, I was a a fragile and rather weak little girl. Grandmother did not hesitate and brought me into her family to care for me, a job that she did with genuine love. We had a very special relationship. When old age settled in and grandmother went into a nursing home, I went to see her regularly.
I remember the one evening when I went to see her, immediately noticing that she was unwell. I wanted to help her, but grandmother energetically insisted on my going back home. Grandmother passed away in the following night, and to this day I wonder why she had sent me home. I would never have left my grandmother alone. For a long time I kept tormenting myself with the thought of having let her down. Eventually, I found some encouragement when reading the words of Mrs Kübler-Ross: 'If a dying person does not want to see anybody, this indicates that he/she has ended his/her ongoing relationship with you, and that is a blessing. He/she is finally able to let go.'
Rest in peace, granny Anna.
I know that you watch over me.
