As a college freshman, Cleve was required by Texas A&M to have a middle name; according to his his widow, Cleve probably selected "Barrett" from the middle name used by William Barret Travis, a hero of the fight for Texas independence, adjusting the spelling to suit his taste, to "Barrett."

Cleve B. Waddell, 82, of Denton died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Denton Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Black Cat Thicket, Hunt County. On July 21, 1943, he married Alice Elizabeth Ramsay in Greenville.
He attended Texas A&M University. He was a design and sales engineer specializing in materials handling systems.
Survivors include his wife of Denton; one daughter, Elise Waddell Bowen; and one son, Richard Ramsay Waddell, both of Massachusetts; two brothers; and one granddaughter.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Music Program Fund, 201 S. Locust St., Denton, TX 76201, or the Denton Humane Society, P.O. Box 1972, Denton, TX 76202
