The 8th of 9 children of Prescott and Mary {Basford} Clark, he first married Lydia Scofield Gates in 1831 in Dunham, Quebec. They had 6 children, 3 of whom lived to adulthood: Adelaide, Elizabeth Jane, William Gates, Matthew Lang, Leah Harris and Olive Carpenter Clark. His wife Lydia died November 2, 1845. Henry then married Mary Matilda Smith on April 5, 1847 in Stanbridge Township, Quebec. They also had 6 children: Isabella, Mary Alla, Lydia Louisa, Henry Lewis, Jennie Francis and Henry Harris Clark. In 1826 Henry went to Burlington, Vermont to learn the trade of hatter & furrier. Following three years of apprenticeship in Burlington, he returned to his home in Canada, where he carried on a successful business for many years. He also had an extensive acquaintance throughout Canada, being well known for his enterprise and interest in public affairs. Henry died at the home of his daughter Elizabeth {Clark} Lewis in Burlington, Vermont, where his funeral took place. He is buried at Frelighsburg Methodist Cemetery, Quebec, Canada, alongside his second wife, Mary Matilda, and several of their children.
