Lydia was the daughter of John Fay of Marlborough, MA and Thankful {Taylor} Fay of Southborough. She was the grand-daughter of David Fay of Marlborough and Sarah {Larkin} Fay of Charlestown, Middlesex, MA. She has a handsome marker beside the wantonly destroyed stone of her husband in the oldest Marlborough, MA cemetery, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Lydia and Lt. Joseph Arnold had five sons and four daughters, before she passed on at the tender age of 33, likely giving birth to another son (note the sad inscription on her headstone). The Arnald spelling of the surname on the marker has been changed to Arnold, which is found in all legal records for this family at the time. Spelling in the 18th century and earlier could be variable, reflecting the literacy at the time and the difficulty accessing written records for verification.
