Stanley J. Birkel, 90

Stanley J. Birkel, 90, died Thursday, August 30, 2001, at the Ellsworth Care Center.

He was born July 7,1911, in Ellsworth, Wisconsin, the son of Edward and Clara (Hageman) Birkel. He graduated from Ellsworth Senior High School and later attended and graduated from River Falls Normal School. He married Alice Knerr June 19, 1934, at Lost Creek.

He farmed in El Paso for most of his life, with the exception of teaching for a couple of years. After retiring from farming in 1965, he moved to Ellsworth, where he worked for the Farmers Union Co-op.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and was an active volunteer in 4-H. He most especially loved farming. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

He is survived by; his son, Stanley Birkel, Jr., Spring Valley,; two daughters, Sally (Russell) Grape, Spring Valley, and Rose (Norman) Nelson, St. Paul, a brother, John (Bessie) Birkel, Ellsworth; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Alice.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the Hill Funeral Home and Cremation Services Chapel, Ellsworth, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
