Alice E. Birkel, age 87, of Ellsworth, WI, died Saturday, August 19, 2000, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital. She was born Nov. 3, 1912, in Deer Park, WI, the daughter of Webster and Caroline Knerr. She graduated from a high school in St. Paul, MN, and was a graduate of River Falls Normal School. She married Stanley Birkel June 19, 1934, at the Lost Creek Church. She taught in a one-room school house in Pierce County and later worked for the Pierce County ASCS Office.

She volunteered her time to Pierce County 4-H and the St. Francis food stand at the Pierce County Fair. She loved traveling and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as she was a loving and caring mother. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Ellsworth.

Survivors include: her husband, Stanley Birkel of Ellsworth; one son, Stanley Birkel, Jr., of Spring Valley; two daughters Sally (Russell) Grape of Spring Valley and Rose (Norman) Nelson of St. Paul; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by; her parents; three brothers, Bill, Owen and Victor; and one sister, Elsie.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 23, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Ellsworth, with Rev. Thomas Donaldson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends were to call at the Hill Funeral Home and Cremation Services Chapel, Ellsworth, from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
