Arthur was born and raised in southeast Iowa, but in the late 1870s, Arthur followed his older brothers James and John to Nebraska and Missouri.

In 1881 Arthur married Martha A Ambrose in Brazito, Missouri. The Cameron family farmed the land south of Jefferson City until 1907 when they were part of the westward expansion in New Mexico Territory.

Arthur was a blacksmith, farmer and continued the family practice when he became the Post Master of Cameron, New Mexico until 1935.
