Henry D (possibly named for his Uncle David Welch who married his Aunt Catherine Cameron) was the first child of James and Selena to be born in Burlington. He was born 3 days before his father James was appointed the first Sheriff of Des Moines County Iowa Territory.

Shortly after his father's untimely death in 1845, Henry took charge of the family farm in Union Township. Over the years, the family farm was one of the leading producers in the county.

On December 18, 1867, Henry married Emma Louisa Sunderland in Burlington. She was born to John and Nancy Sunderland in Rockville, Indiana on April 12, 1848.

In 1868, while living on the farm, Henry and his brothers Robert and Edward formed a development in Burlington, known as the Cameron Addition. The Addition is now divided by US Highway 34.

In 1878, the Camerons adopted Henry Rhea, son to Brightie (Sunderland) and Oscar Hugo Rhea. The Rhea family had to move to Colorado for medical reasons, and allowed the Camerons to adopt their son. While in Colorado, Oscar passed away and Emma's sister did not return to Iowa. The white marker to the left of he Cameron marker in the picture from Aspen Grove Cemetery is that of Oscar Hugo Rhea.

In 1896, Henry D and Emma L Cameron moved to Burlington and their oldest son Clarence and his wife Olive managed the old family farm that his grandfather James had originally purchased in 1838.
