David Barr was born in Michigan in December, 1864, the son of George C. Barr, a veteran of the Civil War (24th Michigan Infantry Regiment). According to the 1880 Census, at age 16, David was living with the Ole Fogelberg family in Union, Republic, Kansas, and working as a hired hand.
David then joined the U.S. Army, served in Arizona in the late 1880s, and was wounded in the hand while on duty in the Philippines (26 Dec. 1899). He was serving as a Quartermaster Sargent at the time with the 9th or 11th Infantry Regiment. After his discharge from the Army, he used his savings to buy a farm in Oklahoma near Pond Creek.
David Barr first homesteaded east of Pond Creek to be near his uncle, Oscar A. Ware. Ware was the brother of his mother, Mrs. George C. Barr. The Barrs and the Wares had moved to northern Kansas from Michigan and were some of the earliest settlers in the Republic City area (Republic County, northwest of Concordia) in Kansas. Earlier, the Barrs had moved to Michigan from New York and Massachusetts.
There he met and married Nettie May McKay in February, 1905.
