Nicholas "Nicky" or “Nick” Joseph Gentile was born in Springfield, MA to Thomas J. and Julia Gentile. He attended local schools and graduated from Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) where he played as a shooting guard for the basketball team. Later, he attended and graduated from UMASS Amherst. While in college, he served in the U.S. Air National Guard. After college, he worked for a short time as a surveyor for the City of Springfield in the Engineering Department and then spent the next 30 years of his career in the Department of Revenue for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, retiring as an Auditor. He was an avid and accomplished golfer with a very low handicap. He was a member of Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield, ran the Beachcomber League at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield, MA,, and played in the Tri-County Golf league, The Birdie Club at Franconia Golf Course, in Springfield, MA., the annual Henry Bontempo Tournament, and many more. He was a proud father and loved the Red Sox, Celtics, and ‘his’ New York Football Giants. At the time of his passing, he left his loving wife Kathy Courtney-Gentile; his daughter, Angela Gentile, of Boston, MA; Kathy’s children Mike and Andrea Saloio, of NYC; his mother, Julia Gentile; his brother, Gary Gentile of North Kingston, RI., his mother-in-law Marie “Nana” Courtney; Angela's mother, Debra (Sibilia) Berthuiame; his many aunts, uncles, cousins, brother and sister-in-laws and numerous friends. His dad, Thomas J. Gentile, who passed away on May 18, 2013, predeceased him. Thomas is buried in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Springfield, MA. Nick is interred a few miles away in Island Pond Cemetery, in Ludlow, MA. Nick was 65 years old when he died.
