Louis was first married to Eva Elisabetha Uebelhor Nov. 23, 1848 in Germany. They had seven children: George Francis, Lewis Frederick, Caroline Wilhelmine, Katherine Louisa, John Lewis, John J. and Katherine. The family immigrated in 1853, arriving in New York and finally settling in Michigan. After Lizzie's death in 1861, Louis married Rosa Schmidth. They had four more children: Louisa Mary, Christina, Herman Charles and Maude.
As well as his service during the Civil War, Louis also fought in the German Revolution.
