COLLISON – Charles Edward "Chuck" Acton, 86, of Collison died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday (June 21, 2011).
He was born August 19, 1924, the fifth of five children to the late Robert L. and Goldie O. Chestnut Acton. He graduated from Armstrong High School Class of 1943 and excelled in athletics, particularly baseball because of his mean curve ball.
He was a lifelong farmer in Pilot Township, Vermilion County. He also worked for the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture as a county fair inspector.
He married the vibrant and lovely Charlotte Ellen Wright on Christmas Eve 1944. Together in their journey they raised two children, Randee Carter of Fithian and Parker (Sally) Acton of Collison.
He is survived by his wife, two children and six grandchildren, Holly Morris, Erin (Aaron) Harrison, Cory Acton, Beau Acton, Matt Carter and Zach Acton; six great-grandchildren, Julian, Jonah and Jett Morris, Alec, Sailer and Ireland Robert Acton and two sisters, Marjorie Norville and Mary Bell Acton.
He became active in politics and campaigned for Barry Goldwater and many others. He was a member of Collison Masonic Lodge 714 and a 32 Degree Mason and Danville Scottish
Rite. His love for us all radiated from blue eyes and warm smile. He provided much wisdom by his sayings and his ways. He never knew a stranger and had a special gift of meeting someone once and instantly making them feel like a special friend. He was a conversationalist and loved company.
He was a huge fan of Indy car racing, AJ Foyt Jr. and the Cubs, and enjoyed gardening, mushroom and deer hunting and fishing. He had a love for the land and enjoyed being out in it in any capacity. He taught us all by example.
He was patient and kind, strong yet gentle. He was a believer and his faith allowed him not to be a worrier. He portrayed unbelieved strength right to the end. He survived many health trials in his life. He was an outstanding husband, father and grandfather who left his mark on us all who aspire to be like him.
A celebration of Chuck's life will be held graveside at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, at Collison Cemetery. Officiating will be William Mulvaney. A Masonic service by Collison Masonic Lodge will also be at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wolfe Funeral Home in Potomac.
