Dempsey Lee Birmingham, 55, of Savannah, Ga., formerly of Brooksville, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, in Georgia.
He was born in Victoria, Texas, and moved from this area many years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served as a helicopter and fixed wing pilot including two tours of duty in Vietnam as a "Dust Off" Medivac pilot. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 5 after serving for 25 years in the Army. He was awarded numerous medals and citations including the Legion of Merit and 38 Combat Air Medals. He graduated from Emery Riddle University with a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical studies in 1977. He was a special training instructor on Gulfstream IVs at Semi Flight in Dallas, Texas. He joined Flight Safety International as the director of pilot training in Savannah. He later became the director of new programs and helped launch the pilot training programs for the new Gulfstream G550, G500, G450, G350 and the Enhanced Vision System.
Survivors include his wife, Karen of Georgia; a daughter, Caroline; and five sons, Dempsey Lee III, Dustin, Dana, Damon and Brett.
