Ira was the son of William A. and Ardelissa Green. When he was seven years old, his father died at Ringgold, Georgia from wounds he received at the Battle of Chickamauga. William A. Green was a member of Company K., 25th Alabama Infantry.

Ira's mother Ardilla, never remarried. At this point, I have no details on her family. Ira's siblings were an older brother, John M. born about 1852 and younger sister, Francis, born February 1859.

Ira married Veila Louise Brackin about 1877 in Alabama. She was a daughter of Mathias and Frances Dowling Brackin. They had five sons: Ira Oscar, William Hardy, Lester, Alma and Shelley.
