According to a family story, Gertha had accompanied Uncle Dempsey Fuller to a horse race in which he had a thoroughbred entered. His horse won, and to celebrate his victory he began to throw handfuls of money out to the spectators. Gertha had become very upset over this and informed Uncle Dempsey that it was hard enough for her financially without her seeing him waste all that money. In response to her chastisement, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a large fistful of money and simply handed it to Gertha causing her to cry.

"One uncle I talked to today said he remembered his Dad telling him on the day of Gerthy's burial, they took her body to the cemetery in a wagon and not many people attended the service because it was raining so hard. My Mother told me she remembers her Dad telling her that his Mother, Gerthy called him into her room, just before she passed away and told him that she was going to have to leave them and asked him to promise her that he would look after the baby, Ernest."
