Dyer did not want his daughter Macy to marry Dennis because he didn't like or trust him, but they ran away and got married without Nelson's blessing. Early in 1898, Dennis was having an affair with Macy's niece, Nancy Sullivan in which she became pregnant. Nancy would be seven months pregnant when Dennis left Macy and married Nancy. The story goes that Dennis never divorced Macy. Dennis would go back to Douglas Co., MO and had another child with Macy, his name was William Burgin born in 1902. When William still a baby, Dennis left home to find work and Macy never saw him again. In the 1920 Missouri Cencus Dennis Burgin was in the State Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri. Dennis would later be released from the State Hospital and return home to Nancy. In 1923 Dennis had stroke. As he recovered, everyone around said he was never the same and acted very strange. On 13 Nov 1923 Nancy died in Kiowa, Oklahoma from two gun shots wounds. One was located at the temple and the other near the center of the back of the head. Dennis said he was in the yard and that Nancy had shot herself. Nancy was revived before she died and said that Dennis had shot her. Dennis said he did not shoot Nancy, but someone else had shot her. Dennis was admitted to The Eastern State Mental Hospital in Vinita, Oklahoma in Feb. 1924 where he remained until his death. Just before his death, Dennis said he had shot Nancy. Dennis died of a cereberal hemorrage. Four of Dennis children would have him buried in a unmarked grave next to Nancy.
