Sergeant Herbert A. Rhoads was radio operator on board of a C-47 tail number 41-18418 and participated in "operation Fustion". The mission was dropping British paratroopers during the night of 13-14 July 1943 on a dropzone south of Catania, Sicily.
The plane was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire.
All crewmembers were killed and buried in the temporary American GELA Cemetery, Sergeant Rhoads was buried in grave I-97-1164. After the war his remains were repatriated and buried in the Milford Ceneter Cemetery, Milford, Ohio.

I am writing a book about the GELA Cemetery, where over 1,200 men and women were buried between July 1943 and April 1947. Hope to finish my book this year, 2015
